BEST PADDLE BOARD WALL RACKS
Buyer's Guide

So, you’ve found the perfect paddle board to get out on the water. Now you just need a suitable wall rack or paddle board hangers to store it safely at home. But with so many different styles on the market, it can be difficult to know which one is right for your situation. In this guide, we’ll break down the various features so you can find the best paddle board wall racks for your needs.

The benefits of storing your paddle board on a wall rack

Storing your paddle board on a wall rack is an easy way to prevent any damage when not in use. If leaned against a wall or left lying on the ground, it is susceptible to accidental knocks or may even fall over, which could result in a costly visit to your local board repairer. Free-standing paddle board racks tend to take up a lot of space, so they aren’t ideal in all situations. Other than looking great, a SUP wall rack is a relatively compact option and a worthwhile investment in the safety of your board.

Storage style

There are two main types of stand-up paddleboard racks available – wall racks and ceiling racks. Wall racks are usually screwed into the wall and hold boards safely at an angle or horizontally. While horizontal-style wall racks will hold your board flat, they do stick out of the wall more than angle-storage wall racks.

Ceiling racks, on the other hand, are designed so that the board hangs from above and are often installed in garages where ceiling space isn’t at a premium. However, they can also be used in the home if you don’t have a lot of wall space and want to gain easy access to your board. The style of rack that suits you will depend on the space available in your house and how many boards you want to store.

Size

Different racks have different dimensions and will store your boards at different angles. So, it’s important to check the measurements before a purchase and make sure it suits your space. Some will protrude from a wall more than others, which may result in your SUP getting in the way. Figure out how much space you can allow for (without constantly bumping into your board) and find a wall rack that meets those parameters.

Materials

It’s important to find a SUP wall rack made from high-quality materials that are durable and made to last. You also want to ensure it has adequate cushioning to prevent any damage to your stand-up paddle board when you’re accessing it or re-mounting it on the wall rack. Look for racks with thickly padded arms made from foam or soft fabric and always read SUP wall rack reviews to see what others have to say about their durability.

Board capacity

Maybe you just have one SUP you need to store or perhaps you’re rapidly accumulating a few. Some wall racks can accommodate multiple paddle boards or a single SUP, a surfboard, or even a kayak. Decide exactly what you want to store and look for a rack that will accommodate the number of boards and sizes you have.

Indoor vs outdoor racks

Most surfers want to store their SUPs indoors and many wall racks are designed solely for indoor use. But you can also find outdoor SUP wall racks that are built using materials that can withstand the elements. These tend to be a little sturdier to hold up against the outdoor climate, with waterproofing and UV coating. That being said, you should always position them out of direct sunlight, wind, and heavy rain to keep your board in the best condition possible.

Ease of installation

Some SUP wall racks are easier to install than others, with single units tending to be the simplest. If you purchase wall racks that come with two separate arms, you’ll just need to do a few measurements before installation to ensure your board is safely stored. At least 3/4 of the board should be held by the rack, so avoid positioning them too close together as you’ll run the risk of the board falling out. Always try and drill into wall studs so that the weight of your racks and boards is adequately supported.

Strength

A wall rack needs to be able to adequately support the weight of your SUP, with a little extra in case you decide to upgrade your board at a later date. Look for wall racks designed to hold the weight of your board(s) + 20% extra, just to be on the safe side.

Accessibility

Lastly, you want your SUP to be easily accessible when it’s time to hit the beach. So, look for wall racks that can be positioned somewhere near your door and won’t require any furniture moving to get to your board.

BEST PADDLE BOARD WALL RACKS
FAQs

Why Do I Need A Paddle Board Rack?

Paddle board racks are an easy and safe way to store your SUP when not in use and prevent any accidental damage. If propped up against a wall or lain on the ground, your board runs the risk of being knocked over or tripped over, both of which could result in costly dings. A SUP rack is also a great way of showcasing your board in your home and will constantly remind you to get out and make the most of it!

How Do You Install a Paddle Board Rack on The Wall?

Different SUP wall racks are installed in different ways, which is why it’s important to follow the instruction guide before you start to drill. If installed correctly, your SUP rack will support the weight of your board, provided it is placed centrally in the rack. When installing two separate arms, it’s a good idea to use a level to make sure your racks are positioned parallel to the floor, and you should always drill into wall studs for extra support.

Can I Use My Paddle Board Rack to Store Surfboards?

Most SUP racks will also accommodate surfboards, and some will even hold kayaks. But it’s important to check the dimensions of the racks to ensure they will store them securely. If you want to store multiple SUPs or both paddle boards and surfboards, look for a wall rack that will hold multiple boards. Always check the weight capacity of the rack and compare it to the boards you have to be on the safe side. If you don’t, you run the risk of the rack falling off the wall and damaging both it and your boards in the process.

How Do You Transport a Paddle Board on a Roof Rack?

If you’re transporting your SUP to the beach on roof racks, place your board so that it is parallel with the car and with the fins facing upwards. The widest part of the SUP should be positioned between the crossbars of your roof racks. Loop one of the straps under the crossbar and run both the tail and buckle end across the top of your board to the other side. Here, you need to loop the tail end under and around the crossbar before inserting the tail end into the buckle. You then need to tighten it and position the buckle between your paddle board and the roof of your car. With the rest of the strap, simply drop it inside the door of your car so it doesn’t flap around while you’re driving.

What Features Should I Look For When Buying a Paddle Board Rack

Aside from the type of storage (wall rack or ceiling rack), you should also consider the size of the rack so that it fits within the space you have available. Decide whether you want to store only one board or a few and if you want to position it inside or outside the house. If you’re installing it outside, it’s important that you find a rack that is weather-resistant (waterproof and UV coated). Look for racks with adequate padding so that your board won’t get damaged and also the strength to support your board. Other factors to consider are the ease of installation and accessibility.
