Buyer's Guide

Many people want to try scuba diving, but they’re hesitant because they think it’s too expensive and complicated. However, you can have a lot of fun with this sport for relatively little money.

The best way to get started is by purchasing an entry-level dive mask. There are many different types of masks available on the market today, so choosing one may seem overwhelming at first. However, there are some important factors to consider when shopping for your first dive mask:

Comfort

The most important factor in choosing a dive mask is comfort. Dive masks come in a variety of sizes and styles, including full-face models and traditional half-face masks. You will want one that fits properly and doesn’t feel too tight or loose around your face. Try on several different models before making your decision.

Weight

Most dive masks weigh less than three pounds when dry, but they can add up quickly when you include other accessories such as regulators and buoyancy compensators (BCs). Make sure that your gear won’t be too heavy for you to carry around comfortably while diving!

Materials

Dive masks are made from two materials: silicone or tempered glass. Both types offer excellent visibility under water

FAQs

Why do I need a diving mask?

A diving mask is an essential piece of equipment for any scuba diver. It allows you to see clearly underwater and to protect your face from potential damage.

What are the different types of diving masks?

There are three main categories of diving masks: full-face, half-mask and snorkel. Full-face masks have a flat pane of glass covering the entire face, while half-masks have a single pane covering the eyes only. Snorkels are similar to half-masks but have no glass at all; they’re just plastic tubes with breathing holes on either side.

Which type of mask should I choose?

Full-face masks offer better protection than half-masks or snorkels, but they’re also more expensive and can be uncomfortable for some people if worn for long periods of time. Half-masks with glass panes provide excellent visibility and aren’t as bulky as full-face masks; however, they don’t protect your face from water pressure as well as full-face models do. Snorkels are inexpensive, portable alternatives that allow you to breathe through your mouth instead.

How do you measure your face for a SCUBA dive mask?

You will need to measure the distance between your pupils (the space between your eyes). It’s best to get someone else to measure this as it’s hard to do yourself. Hold a ruler against the bridge of your nose and mark where it touches both pupils. Measure the distance between these marks with another ruler and add 0.5cm (0.2in) onto this measurement (a bit less than 1/4 inch). This will give you an approximate size for your new mask which should fit snugly around your face without being too tight or too loose.
