What is a dive watch?

Dive watches are constructed to withstand the pressures of being underwater to specific depths while scuba diving. Many watches marketed as dive watches may either be waterproof or water-resistant to specified depths. Seiko dive watches have a marking on the back of the face that indicates the maximum depth of water-resistance.

Dive watches are rated using standards from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). For a watch to be considered a dive watch, it must meet the following requirements:

  • Luminous markers and hands
  • Shock resistant
  • Water-resistant
  • Unidirectional bezel
  • Minute markings
  • Easy-to-read face
  • Chemical resistance
  • Magnetic resistance
  • Solid band

Seiko dive watches with an ISO rating undergo testing in order to comply with ISO standards. Seiko dive watches are constructed for scuba diving by adhering to the ISO 6425 standards.

The first Seiko dive watch was introduced to the market in 1965; this dive watch was rated to a depth of 150 meters. The first professional 600-meter dive watch was brought to market in 1975, and from the 1990s until today, Seiko have been continuously expanding their line of diving watches.

Depth Rating and Water-Resistance

Depth rating and water-resistance are both important factors when shopping for diving watches. Using a Seiko watch for diving past its depth limits may damage your watch, even if it is considered water-resistant. The pressure of scuba diving can crack the watch face or allow water to leak inside, destroying it.

When purchasing a Seiko dive watch, look for a watch that has a rating to at least 330 feet (100 meters). Many of the best Seiko dive watches have a water-resistant rating of up to 660 feet (200 meters), but some of them may only be suitable for surface watersports. Always be sure to check the ratings and specifications before diving with your Seiko watch.

Size

Seiko dive watches come in various sizes, which is an excellent feature for multiple types of divers. The diameter of the case will vary, so be sure to choose one that fits well on your wrist that is not too large or too small. Some Seiko dive watches come with an adjustable strap that works well if you are diving with a wetsuit or a drysuit.

There are many larger dive watches that are a bit heavier but have more significant digits, markers, and hands that make them easier to read if you have trouble with your vision underwater.

Movement & Parts

Seiko dive watches either have quartz or mechanical movement. Quartz movements use a battery and solar power and usually are a bit more affordable. The batteries will eventually need to be replaced over time or during cleaning or watch service. Mechanical watches need to be hand-wound or have a self-winding mechanism that is driven by a mainspring inside the watch.

Regardless of the movement of the watch, dive watches have certain parts that make them tick — a bezel, which is a circular piece that fits around the face of the watch. Bezels are either stationary or can rotate. The best Seiko dive watches have a unidirectional bezel that helps you plan your timing to get to the surface after a dive.

A lume is a feature in all dive watches — the lume assists with being able to see the watch clearly in low visibility or dark diving scenarios. Many Seiko dive watches come equipped with lit hands and markers that are easily seen underwater.

Seiko dive watches either come with stainless steel, Titanium, or some form of resin or rubber strap. The straps are usually interchangeable for style preference or to use a more durable strap during diving versus on the surface.

Analog vs. Digital

Most Seiko dive watches are analog, which means they feature a dial with hands and markers. Other Seiko watches have a digital computerized display screen.

1. Are Seiko watches good quality?

Seiko watches are known for their excellent quality. Seiko builds and manufactures everything in-house at its headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. Seiko was founded in Japan many years ago in 1881 and has been perfecting its watch brand throughout the years. Seiko watches are good quality, and the Seiko gold diver’s watch, Seiko stainless steel diver’s watch, Seiko solar dive watches, and Seiko kinetic diver’s watch are also affordable. Seiko invented the Japanese Quartz style watch, which is popular around the world. Seiko’s dive watches are reviewed as the best quartz watches and also have a wide variety of styles and materials for buyers to choose from. Seiko dive watches have durable materials that help them last for years.

2. What makes Seiko dive watches so good?

Seiko dive watches are so good because of the extensive design and research testing throughout the years since the company was founded. Seiko dive watches are constructed for scuba diving by adhering to the ISO 6425 standards. Seiko also has a wide range of price points that work well for any type of diver. Seiko introduced its first 150-meter dive watch in 1965, its first professional 600-meter dive watch in 1975, and from the 1990s until today have been continuously expanding their line of diving watches. Seiko watches are made with durable materials like stainless steel and Titanium, and also have different types of straps like the accordion-style rubber strap that contract or expand for wetsuits and drysuits. A Seiko scuba diving watch review will almost always mention the excellent design, appearance, and customer service.

3. Are Seiko watches waterproof?

Seiko dive watches are water-resistant to different levels depending on the type of watch. Seiko puts a marking on the back of the watch case to indicate the degree of water-resistance and in which conditions the watch should be used. Seiko also provides an informational table on their website that illustrates the level of water-resistance. Seiko dive watches’ water resistance is not permanently guaranteed due to the effects of aging of the watch gaskets, or deformation of the watch parts due to accidental shock. There are a few things that can be done to preserve the watch’s water resistance. Wiping off moisture, dirt, or sweat with a soft dry cloth increases the durability of the case. Always wash your watch with fresh water after exposing it to seawater, and never wash it while the crown is pulled out.

4. Seiko dive watch comparison: SKA371 vs. SKX007

There are a few differences and similarities between men’s dive watches, the Seiko Men’s SKA371 Kinetic Dive Analog Japanese Quartz Stainless Steel Silver Watch, and the Seiko Men’s Automatic Analogue Watch with Rubber Strap SKX007 included. The SKA371 is made with stainless steel material and also features Japanese Quartz movement. The SKX007 has a stainless steel bezel but comes with a rubber strap. The SKX007 uses the Swiss Automatic movement. Both Seiko dive watches have unidirectional bezels and are water-resistant to 660 feet (200 meters). These two dive watches are similar in size featuring a 42-millimeter case diameter, and the windows are made of Hardlex, making the scratch-resistant. Both the SKA371 and the SKX007 are excellent choices for a Seiko dive watch but have their difference to suit various types of divers and watersports enthusiasts.
