With a speargun, you can hunt fish underwater. It is a tool that is used for catching fish and other aquatic animals.

Spearguns are used in many different ways, but the most popular way to use them is for hunting large schools of fish from the surface. This technique is called spearfishing.

Spearfishing has been around for centuries and it’s still an important fishing method today, especially in some parts of the world like Southeast Asia and Africa.

Spearguns are generally made of wood or metal with a shaft and two wide blades at the end of it with rubber or rope as handles to shoot out water to propel it forward when thrown into water.

The best spearguns are those that have better features like higher quality steel shafts, high-quality rubber bands, and more accurate blades at one end.

Riffe has perfected the art of crafting wooden spearguns over the years, battling for its place amongst top speargun brands. The Riffe Marauder gains a place in our speargun review as its engineering and elegance are hard to rival.

The barrel is crafted using teak at its center and an outside laminate of purple heart, giving the Marauder its refined appearance. Riffe also incorporated a cuttlefish design, requiring less effort for targeting. PATHOS Laser Open Carbon

General Impression

Pathos began producing spearguns in 2000 and has since rivaled some of the world’s best speargun brands for its place on our list. One speargun that really stands out in their range of models is the Pathos Laser Open Carbon.

Like all carbon spearguns, the Pathos Laser Open Carbon is surprisingly light (resulting in advanced maneuverability in water), but it is also compact, powerful, and accurate, making it an excellent competitor piece. However, it was the extra few key features that really caught our eye. The first of those is that users can opt for a left or right-handed grip as they offer a molded handle that brings the meaning of ergonomic to a new level. Secondly is that Pathos also uses what’s called a reverse trigger mechanism – which means the loading tabs are at the very back of the gun, increasing band stretch on the robust dual 17.5mm bands and maximizing range. Additionally, they have created a slight ledge leading off the end of the open track muzzle that keeps the flopper engaged against the spear so that it doesn’t hang down. This can help to avoid any unwanted sound or possible snags when hunting under overhangs or in enclosed spaces.

Recommended for the more intermediate to advanced level spearos. With its unique features, it is clear why the Pathos Laser open carbon has firmly found its place amongst our top ten spearguns.

AB BILLER Padauk Speargun

General Impression

The AB Biller Padauk deserves a mention in our spearfishing gun review as it’s another excellent choice for beginners. Padauk uses a great alternative material for the build (to give it its strength and buoyancy) while also keeping it in the category of cheap spearguns.

For an introductory gun, the Padauk finds an excellent balance between portability, power, and ease of use. The Padauk wood used is very rugged and durable, two themes that have been maintained throughout the rest of the build. The handle is crafted from a hard plastic that is not the most comfortable but will last. The trigger mechanism is completely stainless steel and more than capable of handling the load of the included two 14mm bands. At the rear of the gun is a fairly long butt extension with a large loading pad to allow for hip loading (also making this speargun great for spearfishing on scuba). Overall, the gun is comfortable, easy to load, and tracking fish is no problem with this mini speargun.

It’s worth mentioning that the included 8mm shaft is a little heavy for such a short speargun. The muzzle is large enough to add a third band and increase the range slightly for spearfishermen that want to counteract the added weight of the shaft.

The AB Biller Padauk jumps into our list as a well-built brand that will also exceed expectations as another contender for the best speargun for beginners.

MARES Sten Speargun

General Impression

The Mares Sten pneumatic speargun packs a powerful punch for a small package. The best pneumatic speargun reviews usually have the Sten coming up first. With its sleek, hydrodynamic design and high maneuverability, it’s great for those hard to reach, tight places and thus a top pick for scuba spearguns.

The benefits of this distinctive gun become apparent when opting for the shorter models. With its highly compact engineering and the shaft fitting directly inside of the barrel, even the smaller range delivers a powerful shot. Amazingly, the Mares Sten can deliver a high level of accuracy and penetration with a range of approximately 6-10 ft.

Packing a solid 8mm steel shaft it is extremely bend resistant. Also boasting a rigid easy to grip handle, patented sideline release, and quickly adjustable safety catch – this pneumatic speargun is adaptable to a variety of spearing environments.

For spearfishermen looking for a mini speargun that’s very powerful relative to its size, the Mares Sten is a great option. General Impression

The Hammerhead E2 Jurassic Speargun is not only a great introductory speargun but due to its interchangeability, it’s the last item on this best spearguns review.

Hammerhead spearguns released the E2 Jurassic to fill a need for an excellent introductory gun that won’t need to be replaced as spearos progress. Muzzles, handles, shafts, reels, bands, and other speargun accessories are all user-replaceable at a relatively low cost. Coming stock with a loading butt, pistol grip, easily accessible safety, and stainless-steel line release, the Hammerhead E2 Jurassic has also opted to install the reverse trigger mechanism increasing band stretch and shaft speed. The closed muzzle design can assist with loading and has a retainer for the included single 16mm band as well as an optional additional band.

For a relatively low cost and being one of the most versatile spearguns due to its easily upgradeable design, this is a terrific beginner speargun.

BEST SPEARGUNS
Buyer's Guide

Type

When buying a new speargun one of the first things to establish is the type of speargun you’re after. This will vastly narrow your search so as to not be overwhelmed with options.

One of the most popular types of spearguns is the classic railgun. A railgun is usually a tubular, square, or cuttlefish-shaped barrel constructed of either wood, aluminum, or carbon fiber.

The spear shaft sits on top of the barrel in what’s referred to as a rail guide. The rail guide is a groove or support that covers either a portion of, or the full length of the barrel and which directs the spear when fired.

What powers a railgun is one or multiple elastic bands at the muzzle, referred to as bands or rubbers. The amount and thickness of the bands will dictate the power and range of the speargun. The more bands the speargun has, and the thicker they are, the more speed the shaft will have when leaving the gun. It’s important to find a balance between an ideal amount of power and also personal capabilities when loading the gun. If the rubbers are too strong the speargun will be extremely difficult to load.

Railguns are a go-to for many people as there are so many different options to suit individual needs. It’s also easy to adjust the power with the addition or removal of bands and many repairs can be done by the owner.

Another popular type is what’s called a pneumatic speargun. These use a pressurized air chamber to propel the spear from the barrel. A spear is placed inside the barrel, using a provided tool the spearfisherman presses the tip of the spear into the gun, in turn pressurizing the chamber and providing the propelling force.

The best Pneumatic spearguns are known for having a surprising amount of power (given the unusually short barrels) in comparison to railguns. This makes them a top choice for spearfishing on scuba or in any environment where maneuverability and handling are key.

Size

The longer a spear gun the greater the power and accuracy. Now, this doesn’t mean everyone should go out and buy a massive cannon. Bigger is not always better.

Although longer guns can provide more range and penetration capabilities this comes at a sacrifice. Larger guns will be more difficult to sweep through the water, slowing the time it takes to get the fish in your sights whereas shorter guns are more easily maneuvered. If spearfishermen find themselves hunting in tight spots, caves or overhangs, a large gun will be detrimental.

As hunters, we also need to think about our profile in the water. Once a spearo is all set with fins on, lining up the perfect shot with the gun extended, our profile has suddenly increased to 3 or 4 meters. This can appear very intimidating and spook potential prey if not done properly.

Another aspect to consider when choosing the appropriate size is gun loading. Longer variations of both railguns and pneumatic spearguns can become awkward to load, especially for those lacking experience. A spearo may also be limited by stature as the length of your reach does come into play.

Material

When selecting the material that the best spearguns are constructed from, it’s good to know the benefits of each. Most guns today are crafted from wood, aluminum, or carbon fiber

Wood excels in dampening the transmission of sound which can make all the difference when approaching your prey. It is also extremely durable and hard to damage. The downsides to wood are that it tends to have a larger surface area (increasing drag), and it is far heavier than other materials when out of the water. On the other hand, the increased weight does dramatically reduce recoil. Given the weight on land, it may not be the best option for spearfishermen that need to consider a luggage allowance or ease of portability when traveling. Depending on the type of wood used the cost can vary dramatically.

Carbon fiber on the other hand is extremely light and strong. The best carbon fiber spearguns will feel nearly weightless in comparison to a wooden gun and can accommodate just as many bands. Carbon fiber is exceedingly strong when undamaged, however, it is very susceptible to impact. Quite easily cracked when dropped or hit against hard surfaces, even the smallest amount of damage can compromise the entire barrel. A top choice for many but keep in mind that most carbon guns do not come without a hefty price tag.

Lastly, we have aluminum spearguns. Not technically as strong as wood or as light as carbon but durable and resilient to damage. Also, the best aluminum guns worldwide are easily capable of supporting multiple bands and increased power. Aluminum does however transfer sound far more than other materials which is why some spearos avoid it. Also expect to have far more recoil with a gun of this material. Aluminum spearguns can have a vast price range but it does tend to be quite a cost-effective material.

Muzzle design

Muzzle design is a primary difference you’ll find between a variety of the best spearguns in 2023. The muzzle of the speargun is at the front end and responsible for retaining the bands, aiming, and holding the end of the spear in place.

Closed muzzle designs usually form an arch or circle at the end of the barrel, this prevents the spear from moving when loaded and provides a bit of guidance along with the rail. However, the preference usually lies with ease of loading. The closed muzzle guides the spear into place when loading the speargun – which can provide a bit of assistance to the less experienced.

Open muzzle designs have what’s called a line guide in contrast to the arch or circle. The shooting line travels along the spear, under the line guide, and is then wrapped over the top of the spear which holds it in place. Open muzzles tend to be more streamlined and have a lower profile. Also being able to look directly down the spear without obstruction can improve aim and accuracy.

Spear and flopper

Many manufacturers include a spear that is best for the chosen gun. However, should you be choosing a spear, it’s good to consider the capabilities of the gun, the targeted species, and also personal preference.

Spears come in ranging sizes (relative to the length of the gun), but the preference lies in the thickness of the spear. Usually ranging from 6mm-8mm it’s necessary to find a balance between strength, speed, and weight.

Thicker or heavier spears tend to be less prone to damage and bending but lose their velocity quite quickly if the gun does not have substantial power. Spears in the 8mm range tend to be used with either pneumatic guns that offer high speeds in a shorter range, or extremely large guns used to hunt big game fish.

Spears coming in closer to the 6mm-7mm category do not require as much power for the desired range of the speargun. While the lighter weight causes them to travel faster, large species can easily bend thinner spears, so be careful. Another point to be aware of with these spears is the number of bands on the gun. If a spearfisherman overpowers a gun it will cause what’s known as spear flex which greatly reduces the accuracy.

Finally attached to the spear you will find a flopper which prevents the catch from sliding off. There are a few options for floppers. Hawaiian style sits on the bottom of the spear, Tahitian style sits atop the spear, and then there are double floppers or dual barbed rockpoint tips (both have a flopper on either side of the spear).

Power

When choosing the strength of a speargun there are various factors to consider. Experience level, environment, and the target species are all worth a thought.

For beginners, it’s best to start out in the low to mid-range as loading is more manageable and you will likely be targeting small to medium-sized fish. That being said you will need a gun that has a decent range as you refine hunting techniques. A 90cm speargun is a good starting point.

Based on the location you may find yourself hunting fish that reside in cracks and crevices, kelp forests, overhangs, or any kind of cover. In these situations, many spearfishermen opt for a gun that is less powerful and more maneuverable. The increased range is not always needed and sometimes it’s preferable to have the maneuverability which also applies to low visibility conditions.

Other forms of hunting require spearfisherman to lay on the bottom waiting for their prey to come in range. In this case, it’s likely better to choose one of the best spearguns that offer more range. As some fish tend to be very brave, where others are very shy, the necessary distance to fire could fall anywhere between 10ft-20ft.

Lastly, for a more advanced spearfisherman, you’ll want to consider blue water spearfishing. Hunting big game and trophy fish requires large guns with substantial power. You’ll find it necessary to select a speargun that offers high velocity with decent range and penetration capabilities.

BEST SPEARGUNS
FAQs

1. What gear do I need for spearfishing?

You will need a good mask that seals well and is comfortable. Coupled with the mask you will want a basic snorkel that works well and doesn’t get in the way. You will also need a good pair of fins. The primary concern is comfort, although you will also want to consider the stiffness and length of the fin, possibly investing in freediving fins. A quality knife is a priceless piece of equipment, not only used to dispatch your catch, but it is also key for safety. A weight belt is used to remain underwater comfortably. Rubber weight belts tend to be far more comfortable and are a must for those that are freediving. Of course, you will also need a speargun, additionally, for those that are freediving and possibly for shallow dives on scuba, you may also need a float line. The float marks your location for safety to avoid things such as boat traffic. It attaches to your gun to keep the float close but also ensures you do not lose your speargun should you need to drop it for any reason. Many spearfishermen invest in a wetsuit. Choose a thickness that is appropriate for the environment you’ll be diving in. Wetsuits designed specifically for spearfishing tend to be far more durable and useful. Lastly, a good dive computer is not absolutely necessary but is an excellent addition to any spearos kit whether you are freediving or scuba diving.

2. Pneumatic speargun vs. band speargun?

This question really comes down to preference and purpose. Many spearfishermen opt for pneumatic guns when they need a compact gun, which provides tons of power over a shorter distance.

Spearfishermen tend to lean towards band spearguns when more range is necessary, yet you can find band guns that are appropriate for shorter distances. Correspondingly, if there is a large variation in the depths you are hunting at, it can affect the power of pneumatic guns.

3. Types of spearguns

There are various types of spearguns available to spearfishermen in today’s market. Known as railguns or pipeguns, wood guns, pneumatic guns, or even rollerguns and inverted rollers for the more advanced. They all hold their own benefits for a variety of different circumstances. The type of gun used is influenced by the experience level of the user, the species that the spearfisherman is hunting, and the dive environment. See our buyer’s guide for more information.

4. What is the best speargun for beginners?

The best speargun for beginners will consist of a speargun that is easy to use and not complex. For those beginning their spearfishing journey, it is important to select a gun that is right for the intended purpose.

Another criterion to consider is the ease of loading and maneuvering the speargun. Some spearguns require a fair amount of strength, therefore those with injuries or physical limitations should consider the easier loading options.

Beginners don’t need to choose the shortest most basic guns on the market as it is not recommended since you will soon need to upgrade anyway. However, don’t immediately jump to a gun that can be too large and cumbersome for an inexperienced individual.

5. What is the best pneumatic speargun?

Although not the most popular spearguns in the world, a few extremely reputable brands have their own line of pneumatic spearguns. The best pneumatic speargun is one that is maneuverable, easy to load, and maintains the power that they are known for.

It’s safe to say that the Mares Sten can be found in all the best pneumatic speargun reviews. Compact, maneuverable and deadly, for spearos in the market for a pneumatic speargun the Mares Sten is our top pick.

6. What is the best speargun brand?

It is nearly impossible to narrow down the best speargun to a single brand. All of the leading brands in the world offer reasons why spearfisherman may opt for one or the other. Some brands specialize in different types of guns, where others may specialize in specific markets. See our Best Spearguns 2023 review to help narrow down the choices. From beginner and intermediate to advanced, we have reviewed the top 10 spearguns available to help our readers find the best spearguns today.
